Eighth Grade Literature

Description: In this class students are leaving the delightful world of children’s literature and entering the advanced world of English classics. To make this a successful transition, the reading selections for this age must be carefully chosen. The first selection, Treasure Island, invites students to join in Robert Louis Stevenson's swashbuckling adventure. Students will then read The Wind in the Willows, which is written in the classic English style that has much more demanding vocabulary and sentence structure than American prose. Often thought of as a children’s book, the original is quite challenging and is an effective tool in raising the reading comprehension and vocabulary level of students. It is an absolutely delightful classic for all ages about friendship and the foolishness of youth. Your students will also be led into a love of poetry, which is helpful for memorization and for preparing students to read Shakespeare. As You Like It provides an entertaining, fun, and feasible introduction to Shakespeare and is typically considered the easiest play in the Shakespeare canon. Several passages are required for memorization. The final selection will have the students enter the adventures and mischief of a boy named Tom Sawyer. Students should devote approximately 45 minutes per day for this course. The grade is based on participation, periodic reading quizzes, book tests, and a poetry analysis assignment.
