High School Composition II

Description: Classical Composition is a fourteen-stage writing program that prepares students for university-level writing. The program is based on the "progymnasmata," a system of writing instruction that was the primary method of teaching and learning writing for most of the history of Western civilization. Students will complete a review lesson from each previous stage, and then move on to the Common Topic and Encomium/Invective/Comparison Stages. Students will need to devote approximately 45-60 minutes per day for this class. The grade is based on attendance, participation, and final drafts, which are turned in each week and graded by the instructor. This class is worth 1 high school credit in English, Language Arts, Writing, or Composition.

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisites: Completion of Refutation/Confirmation Stage. Students should be proficient with English grammar, be able to write grammatically complete sentences, construct paragraphs, and edit their work with the help of a parent (if needed).

Required Materials: Common Topic and Encomium/Invective/Comparison student guides. The guides from the previous year will also be required for review. Students will also need a USB headset microphone (built-in microphones also work).
