Foundations for Composition Prerequisites
There a number of things of which a student should have a basic mastery. Prospective students for Foundations for Composition should understand:
Parts of speech:
- Name and define all
- How to identify what part of speech a word is in a sentence
Phrases: different types and how to use
Clauses:
- Main/independent and dependent/subordinate
- How to legally connect clauses in a sentence
Sentences:
- The four types: simple, compound, complex, compound-complex
- The four types: declarative, interrogative, imperative, exclamatory
- How to identify sentence errors: comma splices and run-on sentences
Punctuation:
- Correct uses for all punctuation marks, especially comma, period, question mark, exclamation point, semicolon, apostrophe, hyphen, em dash
