Foundations for Composition Prerequisites

There a number of things of which a student should have a basic mastery. Prospective students for Foundations for Composition should understand:
 

Parts of speech:

  • Name and define all
  • How to identify what part of speech a word is in a sentence
     

Phrases: different types and how to use
 

Clauses:

  • Main/independent and dependent/subordinate
  • How to legally connect clauses in a sentence
     

Sentences:

  • The four types: simple, compound, complex, compound-complex
  • The four types: declarative, interrogative, imperative, exclamatory
  • How to identify sentence errors: comma splices and run-on sentences
     

Punctuation:

  • Correct uses for all punctuation marks, especially comma, period, question mark, exclamation point, semicolon, apostrophe, hyphen, em dash
