PreAlgebra

Description: This class covers a broad range of topics, including measurement, the metric system, a basic introduction to algebra, scientific notation, graphs, statistics, probability, business mathematics, and basic geometry. Also, problem-solving strategies will be used to help students apply mathematical skills to word problems. Homework, quizzes, and tests will be submitted by scanning and uploading, avoiding the technical problems and lack of personal feedback associated with "automatically graded" math quizzes. With a systematic, orderly presentation of concepts and plenty of time for review, your student will gain a strong foundation for high school algebra. This class is not associated with Common Core.

Grade Level: 7-8

Prerequisites: A mastery of addition and subtraction of large numbers and long multiplication and division. These concepts are not reviewed. Some exposure to negatives, fractions, and decimals is helpful, but we do devote focused time to each in the course.

Required Materials: Pre-Algebra Textbook and Solutions Manual by College of the Redwoods. You do not need to purchase the Quizzes & Tests. Students will also need a USB headset (built-in microphones also work). Some kind of scanner will be needed. Conventional scanners are fine, but if parents have a smart phone, an app called TurboScan can convert pictures taken with a smart phone to PDF documents. Then it can be emailed directly to the instructor. Some students have purchased a a tablet, but others have simply used their computer's mouse.
