Chreia & Maxim and Refutation & Confirmation
Description: Classical Composition is a fourteen-stage writing program that prepares students for college-level writing. The program is based on the “progymnasmata,” a system of writing instruction that was the primary method of teaching and learning writing for most of the history of Western civilization. The program teaches students an organized system of creative thinking that is incremental and systematic. Students will review Fable and Narrative from the first year, then move to Chreia and Maxim and Refutation and Confirmation. Students will learn how to structure their thought and learn the task of writing an expository and argumentative essay. The grade is based upon attendance, participation, and biweekly final drafts. Students should plan to spend 45 minutes per day on this class. This class is worth 1/2 a high school credit in English, Language Arts, Writing, or Composition.
Grade Level: 8-9. Students in 6th and 7th grade are strongly encouraged to begin with Chreia & Maxim.
Prerequisites: Completion of Fable and Narrative Stages. Students should be proficient in these skills from the first two stages: outlining, paraphrasing, inversion, reduction, use of the figures of description, and changing the narrator, identification of the nine narrative components, and sentence variations. Students should also possess a solid basic knowledge of English grammar (e.g. subject, verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, direct object, indirect object, etc.) and be able to type grammatically complete sentences. They should also be able to type basic paragraphs and edit them with help from a parent. Chreia & Maxim and Refutation & Confirmation will require students to move from paraphrasing to coming up with original content, examples, and arguments.
Required Materials: Chreia/Maxim Student and Refutation/Confirmation Student. The guides from Fable and Narrative are also required for review (there should be left-over lessons in your guides). Students will also need a USB headset (built-in microphones also work).
Class To Take Upon Completion: Rising students in 8th and 9th grades should take Common Topic. Those who are in 10th or beyond (16 years of age) may consider the accelerated course High School Composition II.
