Classical Studies II

Description: This class begins with the legendary founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. There are three major components: the history of cultures during this time period, biographical studies of important individuals, and an exploration of key contributions to following societies, particularly Western culture. Students will discuss the rise and fall of a monarchy, the embrace of a republic with the simultaneous dislike for kings, and finally the ironic rise of the Roman Empire, all of which teach unforgettable principles about human nature and society. Thematically, we will explore topics such as the right to claim power and govern others, the role of religion in society, and the common elements of long-lasting cultures. Students will need to devote 60 minutes per day for this class. The grade is based on participation, reading quizzes, response essays, and exams that include essays. This class is worth 1 high school credit in History, or 1/2 a credit in History and 1/2 in Literature.

Grade Level: 8-12 (ages 13-18)

Prerequisites: Students must read The Aeneid for Boys and Girls prior to the start of class. A basic knowledge of the ancient world in general and the Greeks in particular is helpful.

Required Materials: Book of the Ancient Romans (text and student guide) by Dorothy Mills, The Aeneid (text and student guide). The Teacher Guides are optional. Students will also need a headset microphone (built-in microphones will also work).
