Elaine Selby


Elaine Selby graduated with a B.A. in English Literature from Oral Roberts University, Tulsa, Oklahoma and earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Boston University with an emphasis in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). She has taught English as a Second Language to adults and college students and has taught adult basic education. She home schooled her four children for ten years and then continued to teach them in the classroom at a classical Christian school in Oregon. The past eleven years she has taught ESL at Johnson County Community College, and High School Composition, Literature and Grammar as well as fifth grade at Whitefield Academy. She has worked with special education students at a local school. Elaine is an endorsed trainer for the phonics program, Spell to Write and Read. She has trained teachers in Korea in the Spell to Write and Read method. During the 2009-2013 school years, Elaine taught several composition (Progymnasmata) classes at Brighton Academy in Overland Park, Kansas, and also has tutored and taught Progymnasmata courses at Whitefield Academy in Kansas City, Missouri.

She has a passion for teaching language arts and is excited about the way any student can learn to write through the clear modeling that the Progymnasmata offers. Elaine is married to Jim Selby, Dean of Faculty and teacher at Whitefield Academy, and is blessed with two boys and two girls, two daughters-in-law, and a beautiful four year old grandson with another wonderful grandson who is two and a half.
