Joel Reed has been a participant of classical Christian education as both a student and teacher. He attended Whitefield Academy in Kansas City from the early grammar stages until his graduation from high school in 2008. At Whitefield he was privileged to have learned the many levels of Classical Composition under the Progymnasmata’s curriculum adapter, Jim Selby. He instilled in Joel the importance and love to practice communicating clearly, aesthetically and virtuously. Joel studied classical Latin for eight years, and for a short while Spanish and French. He obtained a B.A. in Biblical Studies and also in Sports Ministry from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago where his addiction to deep dish pizza also originated.

Upon returning to the Midwest, he taught both Latin I and II and the Progymnasmata (Classical Composition) for three years at Brighton Academy along with a C.S. Lewis Literature class on a few of his allegorical works. For three years he returned to work for his Alma Mater, Whitefield Academy, as the Athletic Director, Physical Educator for kindergarten through twelfth grade and coached year-round. Now he is pleased to be in his third year of teaching composition and Latin at Memoria Press. Joel is an avid Kansas City Sports fan and participates in an Ultimate Frisbee League in the summertime, and would much rather participate in the sports he loves than watch them! Some of his fondest memories from his Classical education are performing Petruchio on stage in Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew and discussing the Christ type figure of Beowulf in literature class with Jim Selby.
