Music History: Late Renaissance to Early Modern

Description: This course surveys music’s expression and influence from the end of the Renaissance through the Early Modern period (1920s). Western culture will be evaluated in the light of music composition and performances. Students will explore the rich connection between general history and the fine arts through engaging lectures and exercises. Classes will be dynamic, with many musical and visual illustrations as well as time for student interaction. This course will bring abstract knowledge of history and culture into an integrated whole as it examines the things we call beautiful.

Students will need an average of 30-45 minutes per day for this class. The grade is based on completing the assigned listening and viewing, reading the weekly material, brief quizzes, and exams. No background or training in music is required

Grade Level: 9-12 (ages 14-18)
