Pre-Algebra

Description: This class covers a broad range of topics, including measurement, the metric system, a basic introduction to algebra, scientific notation, graphs, statistics, probability, business mathematics, and basic geometry. Also, problem-solving strategies will be used to help students apply mathematical skills to word problems. Homework, quizzes, and tests will be submitted by scanning and uploading, avoiding the technical problems and lack of personal feedback associated with “automatically graded” math quizzes. With a systematic, orderly presentation of concepts and plenty of time for review, your student will gain a strong foundation for algebra.

Grade Level: 7-8 (ages 12-14)

Prerequisites: A mastery of addition and subtraction of large numbers and long multiplication and division. These concepts are not reviewed. Some exposure to negatives, fractions, and decimals is helpful, but we do devote focused time to each in the course.

Required Materials: Students who register for this course will be notified when the textbook is available from Memoria Press. Some kind of scanner will be needed. Conventional scanners are fine, but if parents have a smart phone, they convert pictures taken with a smart phone to PDF documents. Some students have purchased a tablet to work math problems in class, but others have simply used their computer’s mouse.
