Renaissance and Reformation

Description: Some of the most influential events in history occurred during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. About a decade after Christopher Columbus took his last voyage to the New World, a young monk named Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in the town of Wittenberg, Germany. What Luther thought would develop into an academic debate turned the world upside down and divided Christendom. Five years before that event, the famous Florentine sculptor-turned-painter Michelangelo was on his back painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling in Rome, Italy. He was one of the major figures in the art movement that would sweep Europe – The Italian Renaissance. What do Reformation and Renaissance have in common? What led to their beginnings? What were their lasting effects? This class will delve into such questions and more!
